Norristown is located in the center of the NTC complex, which is about 17 miles north of Philadelphia and south of Pottstown. US 202 is an important north-south route through the city that connects the city with the Pennsylvania State University and University of Pennsylvania campuses. The area where Norristown is located was originally owned by Isaac Norris, who bought the land from William Penn in 1704. When Montgomery County was founded in 1884, it was named county seat and expanded to a town of about 1,500 inhabitants in 1853 and 2,000 inhabitants in 1861. After the Civil War, it grew rapidly, growing to 22,265 by 1900, but declined in the decades after World War II. Today, the city has 38,181 "Norristonians," making it the second largest city in Pennsylvania with a population of more than 1.5 million. Indeed, it has been described over the years as one of the largest cities in North America, after New York City in terms of population growth and population growth. It is also the third largest city with an average annual income of $2.7 million, making it America's fourth largest city after Philadelphia and Philadelphia, although it declined for decades during World War II and has since declined.
